Countdown to

The Weekend

Resolving to the next Saturday, the start of the two-day break.

5 days until the Weekend, on Saturday, November 7, 2026.

The Weekend is Saturday, November 7, 2026. Happens every weekend (Saturday and Sunday).

The weekend is the short pause that closes the working week, for most of the world Saturday and Sunday. It is less a holiday than a rhythm: two days set aside for rest, errands, sport, worship, and time with family before the next week begins. This countdown treats the weekend as beginning on Saturday and simply tells you how long until it arrives.

How we get this date. There is nothing to look up in a table. The page finds the next Saturday on or after today, the conventional start of the weekend, and counts the days to it. If today is already Saturday, the countdown reads zero; on a Sunday it looks ahead to the following Saturday, six days out. Because it is a plain weekday calculation done fresh in your browser, the page never goes stale and never needs a rebuild to stay correct.

Where the two-day weekend came from. The weekend is a surprisingly modern invention. The English word β€œweek-end” appears only in the late 19th century in Britain, describing the stretch from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning. The two full days off grew out of the labor movement and the competing sabbaths of Jewish (Saturday) and Christian (Sunday) workers. In 1926 Henry Ford cut his factories to five days without cutting pay, betting that rested workers would be more productive and would spend their free time and wages. The pattern spread, and the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 set 40 hours as the overtime threshold for covered workers, fully in force by 1940, which helped make the Monday-to-Friday, five-day week the norm.

That two-day shape is not universal. Across much of the Middle East the rest days are Friday and Saturday, and plenty of jobs, from nursing to hospitality to retail, keep their own rotations. Whatever your schedule, the countdown above marks the most common version of the finish line: the next Saturday.
